July 2012- The Very Hungry Caterpillar

A teacher and friend of ours is having a themed playgroup date coming up later this moth involving the Very Hungry Caterpillar, so we seized the opportunity to do a fun summer preschool pack. The fruits the caterpillar he ate Monday through Friday tied in well to the Fruit of the Spirit faith theme for the month. I really like having some fun learning activities during the summer so we aren't spending all of September reviewing numbers, shapes, letter and colors that we learned this last year. Several websites had some great materials. Here are some activities we've enjoyed so far....

Materials we already had.....

Following the Hermie and TVHC books along with YouTube

Caterpillar ABC's from the Moffatt Girls post here. We did the lower case too.

Butterfly craft instructions are from Kizclub too. Coloring page credit below.

Number Puzzle from 1+1+1=1's preschool pack here

Sizes for the caterpillar, also from 1+1+1=1

Sizes for the butterfly, from 1+1+1=1

Colors of the food he ate, from 1+1+1=1

Shape recognition, from 1+1+1=1

Laimated, now just need to cut out!

Telling the story with the props from Kizclub post here, has by far been the biggest hit.
I've lost count how many times he's walked through the story, with out the book I might add.

I have video of him doing this I'll upload later. I did number the pieces after a couple days
since they were getting played with and mixed up so often.

Doing some of the activities:
Toy caterpillar, who changes in to a butterfly. You take turns stuffing one in to the other

These craft ideas and examples were all courtesy of my super talented teacher friend Allison at the  playgroup she organized:
Coffee filter butterflies

bottle cap caterpillars

hand print caterpillar

fruit to snack on!

coloring pages

Reading the book to the kiddos

Mrs Allison helping Munckin with his project

Doodlebug checking out the book

Food coloring fun

cute boys snacking together. Our little friend's face cracks me up!

My niece J, reading to Doodlebug
We also found a stuffed VHC which I couldn't resist getting for the boys at a bookstore. It's now one of Munchkin's special bed time friends :-)
